History Intent:
At Greenlands, we believe History is a key aspect in understanding the world in which we live in. We endeavour to provide our children with opportunity to gain a love of learning about the past through a variety of different eras, cultures, beliefs and communities. Our History curriculum enables children to develop a sense of chronology, place and how societies have developed and shaped our lives. Throughout their Greenlands journey, our children will learn about the History of our local area and how this has changed over time and made Preston the place it is today. In History, we intend to provide our children with the skills to enquire, question and research in addition to gaining knowledge about the periods of History studied. Before our children leave Greenlands, they will have learnt to compare and contrast a range of different periods of time confidently, have a curiosity to find out more about the past and be able to showcase their knowledge and skills through engaging learning opportunities. Our policy and curriculum complies with the National Curriculum and equips our children to think like a historian.
History is a study of time and change. Pupils will gain an understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Major historical events and periods are covered with reference to people alive at the time.
Children carry out local studies in which they trace historical influences within their local area. History helps pupils to understand peoples lives, the process of change, different societies and the relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity.
