Geography

Statement of Intent

Geography provides the foundation for understanding the world around us. It can not only teach pupils about the world they live in, but also how to study it and make sense of various phenomena. As such, it is a fundamental aspect of all children’s learning. It is our intention at Greenlands School to provoke and provide answers to questions about how people affect places and places affect people. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it, while fostering our school values of respect, compassion, trust, perseverance, resilience and ambition. The children will develop an understanding of geography concepts, knowledge and skills through real life experiences and fieldwork. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Through adherence to our policy, Greenlands Community Primary School will not only ensure statutory compliance with the national curriculum, but also that all pupils have a solid grounding in Geography and a positive attitude towards geographical knowledge and skills.

Sustainability

Sustainability is an important thread running throughout our geography curriculum. As children progress through the school, they develop an understanding of how people interact with and influence the environment, exploring themes such as climate change, conservation, biodiversity, resource use and environmental responsibility in an age-appropriate way. Through fieldwork, geographical enquiries and real-life contexts, children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically about environmental issues and consider how their own actions can make a positive difference. By revisiting these concepts throughout the curriculum, children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become informed, responsible citizens who care for both their local environment and the wider world.

Eco Warriors

Our Eco Warriors are a pupil leadership group dedicated to making our school a greener and more sustainable place. Working together, they identify ways to improve our school environment, lead environmental projects and encourage others to adopt sustainable habits. Whether promoting recycling, reducing waste, saving energy, caring for wildlife or improving our outdoor spaces, Eco Warriors play an active role in helping our school community make a positive impact. Through these experiences, children develop leadership, teamwork and a strong sense of environmental responsibility while learning that even small actions can make a big difference.
