Design and Technology

Statement of Intent:
Design and Technology at Greenlands
aims to prepare children for life beyond
the classroom. We encourage children to
use their creativity and imagination, to
design and make products that develop
their own ideas and put them to the test.
Design and Technology is an inspiring,
rigorous and practical subject. It can be
found in many of the objects children use
each day and is a part of children’s
immediate experiences. We aim to
inspire designers and constructors of the
future!

Design technology gives children the opportunity to develop their own ideas and test these. Children make links to real life and create an original product with a user and purpose in mind. They are given opportunities to continually evaluate their products and use this to improve their designs.

Children learn how to use a variety of tools and equipment and they are encouraged to design, make and test original ideas. From working in this way they gain practical skills, knowledge and understanding of a variety of materials. They work with wood, recycled materials and food technology. Experiences are linked with other subject areas such as science and art. Design technology gives children the opportunities the work of other designers. We aim to inspire designers of the future!

These images are from Year 6’s textiles unit: waistcoats. We decided that, since it was close to Christmas, we would design and make a waistcoat for a Christmas teddy bear. We researched famous designers including Vivienne Westwood, Thomas Burberry and Stella McCartney. We commented on their work and said what we liked and disliked about it. Using inspiration from all three designers, we designed our Christmas waistcoats. We learnt how to tie a knot in the thread with ease, master a running, blanket and backstitch before securing the stitch with a tight knot. We attached decorations to our waistcoats and considered which stitch would be suitable each time, be it functional or decorative. We were very proud of our achievements and many of us were excited to wrap them up as Christmas presents for family and friends.

In this D.T. unit, Year 3 made different products using foods that were both imported from abroad and grown here in the UK. Their final product was a fruit crumble using all locally sourced ingredients that were in season at the time.
