French is taught across Key Stage 2 and the curriculum gives the children the opportunity to learn about different countries, communities, traditions and also to begin to express themselves in a different language. Children experience exposure to French by reading French books; singing French songs; listening to French language modelled correctly; speaking French to their peers and then beginning to write short pieces of work in the target language. Children are also given the opportunity to explore French through digital sources such as the internet and access to language websites, such as Linguascope. We encourage children to ‘have a go!’ and have a ‘can do’ attitude to learning a new skill. We also, wherever possible, link to schools in France to offer purposeful exchanges of work and appreciate other cultures and ways of life. In a world where being part of a global community is key, MFL is at the heart of this and we aim to inspire all our children to know that they can become linguists!
